The Ha Giang Loop is a circuit through the far north of Vietnam that starts and finishes in Ha Giang city. This is the road we ride, stop by stop - the passes, the market towns and the river gorge, and what each one is known for.
Every dot is a place we stop. Open one for a photograph and what makes it worth the ride.
The gateway city where every loop begins and ends - collect your bike, fuel up and roll out into the mountains.
Heaven's Gate pass and the Twin Mountains - your first big view out over the karst valleys.
Pine-lined roads and a calm valley town - a favourite lunch and coffee stop mid-climb.
The old Karst Plateau town - a cobbled ancient quarter, a lively night market and the H'mong King's palace nearby.
Vietnam's northernmost point - the flag tower looking straight across the border into China.
The crown jewel - the Ma Pi Leng Pass hanging high above the turquoise Nho Que River gorge.
A remote market town ringed by peaks, and the launch point for boat trips into the Tu San canyon.
A laid-back village of homestays, rice paddies and a waterfall - the mellow final stretch of the loop.

We ride this route over three or four days, in small groups, with local guides. You can ride it yourself, sit pillion behind an easy rider, or do the whole thing by 4x4 if you would rather leave the driving to someone else.
Both lengths start and finish at our villa in Ha Giang, and the nights out on the loop are spent in homestays in the villages on the map above.
