Your note goes to the crew in Ha Giang, not a call centre - a real guide answers it. No pressure and no hard sell either: if another trip suits you better, we'll say so.

Booking with the real Flipside? Flipside is the original Ha Giang Loop operator. We only take bookings through this website and our official WhatsApp below - if a lookalike name or site has been in touch, check with us first.

The things riders always ask

Still not sure? Ask anyway. There's no such thing as a daft question about a road like this one.

Or reach us direct

What level of riding experience is required?

It depends which tour, and there is a version of this trip for almost everyone:

  • True North: all skill levels. Whether you ride every weekend or have never sat on a bike, you will enjoy it. Riders who want more power can upgrade to an XR150, and anyone who would rather not ride can go pillion with an easy rider.
  • Private tours: built around your group, so the riding is pitched at whatever level you are at.
  • Enduro and dirt bikes: normally for well-experienced, skilled riders. This is the one with a real entry requirement.
  • 4x4: no bike at all. The same route, the same stops, from the comfort of a rugged vehicle with a local driver - good for families, groups, and anyone who would rather leave the driving to us.

If you are not sure where you fit, get in touch. We would rather talk it through and find something that works for your ability and experience than have you guess.

Why should I choose Flipside over other loop companies?

We started the Ha Giang Loop. More than a decade on we are still the ones out there finding the new roads, the swimming holes and the viewpoints nobody else has got to yet - and then watching the other companies turn up at them a season later. Being copied is flattering. Being ahead is the point.

The rest of it is quality, character and connection. We're not the cheapest, but we are the most intentional: small groups, safety first, real experiences, and a laid-back but respectful vibe. No rowdy party crowds or selfie-stick stampedes - just curious, open-minded travellers of all ages, here for the ride, the culture and the story. We build our trips for people who want adventure with meaning. If that sounds like you, we'll get along just fine.

When is the best time to do the Ha Giang Loop?

There is no bad time, but the seasons are genuinely different:

  • September to November: the best balance. Clear skies, the rice terraces turning gold, and dry roads. October is the busiest month up here, so book early.
  • December to February: cold and often beautifully clear. The passes can drop close to freezing overnight, so bring layers.
  • March to April: quieter and greener, with showers building towards the end.
  • May to August: the wet season, heaviest in July and August. The scenery is at its most dramatic and the rain often comes in short afternoon bursts, but the roads are slippery and landslides are a real thing.

One thing the forecast will not tell you: the passes are nothing like the city. Ha Giang can be shirtsleeves while Ma Pi Leng is sitting in fog and wind, and one side of a mountain can be in drizzle while the other is clear. Pack for both.

What should I pack for a motorbike tour?

We'll send a detailed packing list when you book, but the essentials are:

  • Riding gear suited to the weather (jacket, pants, boots)
  • Comfortable clothing for off-bike activities
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
  • Personal toiletries
  • Any medication you need
  • A camera for the memories
  • A sense of adventure

Not essential, but worth throwing in: swimwear. There are waterfalls and swimming holes on the route, and in warmer weather you will want it.

Is there phone signal and wifi?

In the towns you stop in, yes - enough for messages, maps and a call. A local SIM or eSIM from one of the main providers - Viettel, Vinaphone, Mobifone - is worth picking up. On the passes it comes and goes, and around Ma Pi Leng it disappears for a few kilometres at a time. Download your maps offline before you set off and treat the quiet stretches as part of the appeal.

What are your safety requirements?

Safety is non-negotiable for us. We started the Ha Giang Loop and have been leading tours through these mountains for over a decade - long enough to know exactly what these roads demand:

  • Every rider's ability is assessed before departure with a real competence test, not just a conversation.
  • Every helmet we provide is ECE or DOT certified.
  • Every bike gets a 15-point mechanical check each morning before we leave, and again on return.

Adventure, done carefully.

What distances are covered on the tour?

It varies with the tour's difficulty and terrain. Beginner-friendly tours cover shorter distances, around 100-150 km a day, while intermediate and advanced tours might range from 150-250 km or more. We balance riding time with breaks for sightseeing, meals and rest, so it stays comfortable and enjoyable.

What types of accommodation will we stay in?

These terms get confusing, especially in rural Vietnam where the lines blur. Here's a quick glossary of what you'll hear about in Ha Giang:

  • Homestay: usually a family-run home where you stay in a private or shared room - more about cultural connection, with home-cooked meals and basic amenities.
  • Guesthouse: a small, often family-run lodging with private rooms and a bit more privacy - like a mini hotel: simple, functional and affordable.
  • Hostel: budget backpacker digs, often basic and crowded in rural areas, usually lacking the character and local connection we aim for. We won't put you up at a hostel.
  • Hotel: more standardised service with private rooms and daily cleaning, but in Ha Giang hotels tend to be basic rather than luxury.
  • Villa: a larger standalone property with more space and communal areas. Our Flipside Villa has dorms and private rooms, a pool, jacuzzi and garden - more of a social hub than a hotel.

Bottom line: we mix the best of these during your trip - clean, character-filled, locally owned places that add to the adventure.
